Previously based in Melbourne, Danica Garizio has long been part of the Tribe Home community. Now making waves on the Gold Coast with the launch of her architecture practice, Studio Garizio, she's traded city streets for ocean views. We caught up with Danica to chat about her move, what's next for the studio, and how rugs play an integral role in shaping the architectural design story.

[Q] Can you tell us a bit about your journey as an architect? What drew you to the field and how has your approach to design changed over time?
[DANICA] Architecture was always around me growing up. My Nonno designed and built homes, and my dad followed in his footsteps, so I was exposed to the world of construction, design and problem solving from a very young age. Then as a teenager, watching my dad work really reinforced that connection for me. In many ways, it always felt like architecture was in my blood.
The early stages of my career shaped the technical side of my approach, learning how buildings come together, how details are resolved and how to think critically about design. Over time, my focus has shifted toward how spaces feel and how they enhance people’s lives day to day. That’s what interests me most now - creating spaces that feel calm, considered and deeply connected to the people living within them.
[Q] You’ve recently made the move from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and are now starting your own firm — what prompted that shift, and how has it influenced the way you’re thinking about architecture today?
[DANICA] I saw a real opportunity in the South East Queensland market and a growing appreciation for thoughtful architecture and design.
Over the years I spent a lot of time between Brisbane and the Gold Coast visiting family and my partner, often staying for extended periods. I became really drawn to the energy here - not just the lifestyle and climate, but the momentum around development, creativity and the way people are beginning to engage with design differently. It feels like a place where I can bring a different perspective shaped by my experience in Melbourne.

[Q] As an architect, where do rugs sit within your design process - are they considered early on, or do they emerge as the space begins to take shape?
[DANICA] Texture is always considered early in the design process, and rugs naturally become part of that conversation. For me, rugs do much more than simply finish a room - they help ground a space, soften transitions, and create a sense of cohesion between materials, furniture, and architecture. There’s often a subtlety to them that can completely change how a room feels without demanding attention.
[Q] When selecting a rug for a space, what design principles or criteria do you prioritise?
[DANICA] It really depends on the space and how it’s intended to function. I always consider texture, tone, scale, and practicality together rather than in isolation. A high traffic living area requires something very different to a quieter bedroom or retreat space.
I’m naturally drawn to pieces with depth and subtle texture, particularly those that work harmoniously with the surrounding material palette rather than overpowering it. Ultimately, I look for pieces that feel timeless and connected to the overall atmosphere of the space.

[Q] How does the function of a room influence your choice of a rug, both in terms of design and practicality?
[DANICA] Function influences almost every decision. In living spaces, rugs often need to anchor furniture layouts and withstand heavier daily use, so durability and scale become important considerations alongside comfort and texture. Bedrooms tend to call for something softer and quieter — pieces that contribute to a more calming and restorative atmosphere.
That said, I always try to balance practicality with emotion. A rug still needs to feel beautiful and considered, regardless of how functional it needs to be.
[Q] What was your intention or brief when you first chose the Ark rug for your own space — what qualities were you looking for?
[DANICA] I originally selected the Ark Rug for my apartment in Armadale, Melbourne. I was looking for something that would bring warmth, texture and softness into the space while still feeling refined and understated. The Ark Rug felt like the perfect balance of tone, scaleand texture — it connected everything beautifully.
One of the things I loved most was the way it interacted with the natural light in the mornings. It added a softness and depth that made the space feel calm and grounded.
I’ve since brought it with me to the Gold Coast, and it’s one of those pieces that has continued to work effortlessly within a completely different environment, which speaks to the timelessness of the design.

[Q] How do you balance personal preference with design intent when selecting pieces like rugs for your own living spaces?
[DANICA] It’s always about choosing what feels right for the space. I try to approach my own home in the same way I approach projects for clients - focusing on longevity, atmosphere and how the space needs to function day to day. Personal preference naturally plays a role, but I think the best interiors come from restraint and cohesion rather than reacting to what’s current.
